8 services that may enhance back pain treatment near you

Writer: KC Rehab TeamKC Rehab Team

The spine is a complex and critical system that we rely on every single day. Doctors and chiropractors aren’t always able to help with managing day-to-day back pain. Physical therapists use natural, noninvasive treatments to help with acute injuries and long-term pain management.

When you’re looking for a physical therapist near you to treat your back pain, you should take the time to find someone you trust. You can start by learning about their treatment approach and their credentials. Understanding the services they provide and the options available to you is another important component.

At KC Rehab, we help with many of the most common sources of back pain. See if there’s a location near you in the Kansas City, Missouri, area.

In this blog post, we’ll talk about eight physical therapy services that can enhance your experience when seeking treatment for back pain near you.

Soft tissue mobilization and joint mobilization are two of the main tools your physical therapist will use to treat your back pain. Also known as myofascial release, soft tissue mobilization is a method of breaking up knots of tension or “trigger points.” Your PT will use their hand to apply pressure with massage-like movements, loosening stiffness between layers of tissue. In joint mobilization, your PT will use their hands to promote healthy movement in joints such as your spine or shoulders. This can increase range of motion and improve mobility by reducing pain, stiffness and friction.

Consider adding on the following treatments when you seek physical therapy treatment for back pain:

  1. Ergonomic evaluation — Back pain often builds up over time because of poor posture, repetitive movements or holding the same position for long periods. If your job or other daily activities are contributing to your back pain, your PT can do an ergonomic evaluation to recommend some changes that may help.

  1. Functional capacity evaluation — This evaluation helps determine what tasks you can handle at work. Workers are typically evaluated when they’re ready to return to work after taking time off for an injury.

  1. Work hardening — If you’ve had to take time off work for back pain, your PT can help you recover and learn how to keep your body in good shape. Work hardening is one of our specialties at KC Rehab.

  1. Dry needling — Dry needling is like a much more targeted version of acupuncture. Your PT will insert needles into certain muscles to help release tension and stimulate a healing response. Dry needling can help with stubborn back pain that goes deep inside muscles and connective tissue.

  1. Blood flow restriction (BFR) therapy — If your back pain is related to rapid muscle growth from strength training, BFR therapy may be especially helpful. Your PT will fit you with a Personalized Tourniquet System, which applies a controlled amount of pressure while you do gentle exercises.

  1. Soft tissue mobilization — Also known as myofascial release, soft tissue mobilization is a method of breaking up knots of tension or “trigger points.” Your PT will use their hand to apply pressure with massage-like movements, loosening stiffness between layers of tissue.

  1. Therapeutic exercise — Therapeutic exercise can help build up muscles in your core and back to create more support in your spine. Exercises can also help increase range of motion and mobility. Your PT may guide you through exercises during treatments or provide an exercise program for you to do at home.

  1. Targeted stretching — Each person may need to stretch their back in different ways to relieve tension and pressure. Specific stretches may help relieve your pain, but others may make it worse. You should work with a physical therapist to find out what stretches will work best for you.
