What causes a sharp pain in the hip?

Pain of any kind can be frustrating. While many types of pain can go away on their own with time, such as a dull ache in your back after moving something heavy or a headache from being in a loud environment, there are others that are harder to ignore, such as a sharp pain.

When pain is described as feeling sharp, it’s often sudden, throbbing and intense. For example, pain from slamming your knee into the corner of a table could be described as a sharp pain. But what if you’re feeling a sharp pain in your hip that doesn’t seem to be going away? There are a few potential causes that could explain it.

We’ll start by talking about a few of the possible reasons that you may be experiencing a sharp pain in your hip. Then we’ll go over how we can help treat the pain at KC Rehab.

Why are you feeling a sharp pain in your hip?

Sharp pain is often called nociceptive pain by health care professionals. It refers to pain that stems from body tissue damage. While pain can sometimes be difficult to accurately describe, a sharp pain usually means that it feels like the area is throbbing or like it’s being repeatedly stabbed by a sharp object, which is why it may be referred to as a “stabbing” pain.

A sharp pain in your hip can make you feel like you’re unable to do anything but lie down until it goes away. By learning about the possible reasons for the sharp pain in your hip, you can gain a better idea of what treatments will be the most effective in alleviating it.

Here are a few possible reasons that you’re experiencing a sharp pain in your hip:

  • Femoroacetabular impingement — Commonly referred to as hip impingement, femoroacetabular impingement occurs when there are abnormalities in the hip joint, causing the bones to rub together. Sharp pain can flare up when being active or doing certain movements, such as squatting or twisting. It’s a common cause of hip pain as well as groin pain, especially for people between the ages of 20 and 45, though many people may never experience symptoms.

  • Labral tear — There’s a ring of cartilage around the hip joint socket called the labrum. It works as both a cushion for the joint as well as a way to keep the ball secure in the socket. It’s possible to tear the cartilage due to repetitive pivoting or twisting movements. It can also be the result of trauma or wear and tear over time. Labral tears are especially common for athletes and people who live an active lifestyle, due to excessive hip strain and risk of falling. A labral tear can cause sharp, shooting hip pain, especially during movements.

  • Bursitis — In the hip, there are two major bursae, which are fluid-filled sacs that protect the bones from the surrounding soft tissue. One bursa covers the point of the hip bone, called the greater trochanter. When the hip is overworked due to exercise or standing for extended periods of time, the bursae can become inflamed and irritated, causing trochanteric bursitis. It can result in sharp hip pain that may decrease to a dull ache with time.

If you’re experiencing recurring sharp pain in your hip, physical therapy is a beneficial treatment option.
